Located in the picturesque surroundings of Cañizar del Olivar, Camping Las Aguas is the perfect starting point to discover the wonders of the three regions that surround it: Maestrazgo, Cuencas Mineras and Sierra de Arcos. We will propose some of the possible visits to be made. The aim of this proposal is for the reader to get to know the different types of options that exist so that, based on the information provided, he/she can expand the information according to his/her interests in order to build his/her visit plan according to the number of days he/she will be staying at the campsite.

OPTION 1: Visit to the picturesque villages of the Maestrazgo area

This first proposal consists of a tour of the charming villages of Montoro, Montoro de Mezquita, Tronchón, Cantavieja and Mirambel. Each of them offers a unique experience, combining history, nature and culture. The tour can combine a visit to the village with stops at the different points of interest along the route.

Montoro and Montoro de Mezquita

Montoro and its hamlet Montoro de Mezquita are natural jewels of the Maestrazgo. In Montoro de Mezquita, you cannot miss the Órganos de Montoro, an impressive geological formation that stands as a natural monument. In addition, the Valloré Strait offers a river walk with footbridges that immerse you in spectacular surroundings.

How to get there: From Cañizar del Olivar, take the A-1702 road, known as ‘The Silent Route’, which will take you through dreamlike landscapes to Montoro de Mezquita. The journey takes approximately 40 minutes by car.

Tronchón

Famous for its cheese, Tronchón is a small village with a special charm. Stroll through its cobbled streets and visit the church of Santa María Magdalena. Don’t forget to try the local cheese, which was even mentioned by Cervantes in “Don Quixote”.

How to get there: From Montoro de Mezquita, continue on the A-1702 towards Tronchón. The journey takes about 30 minutes. I recommend eating at the restaurant Casa Matilde: the restaurant, the owner and the food will surprise you for the better.

Cantaveja

Cantavieja, the historic capital of Maestrazgo, will take you back in time with its impressive Plaza Mayor, surrounded by medieval buildings. Visit the Church of the Assumption and the Carlist Wars Museum to learn more about the history of the region.

How to get there: From Tronchón, follow the A-1702 towards Cantavieja. The journey takes about 25 minutes.

Mirambel

Known as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, Mirambel is a place that looks like something out of a fairy tale. Its cobbled streets and medieval walls invite you to lose yourself in its history. Don’t miss the Convent of the Augustinian Nuns and the Puerta de las Monjas. The monumentality of Mirambel’s buildings will surprise you.

In 1980, its town centre was declared a Historic-Artistic Site, standing out for its perfectly preserved medieval architecture2. Furthermore, in 1982, it received the prestigious Europa Nostra award, which recognises outstanding projects in the defence of European cultural heritage How to get there: From Cantavieja, take the A-226 towards Mirambel. The journey takes about 20 minutes.

OPTION 2: Visit the Mina de la Escucha (Mine of the Listening)

The Mina de Escucha, converted into the fascinating Mining Museum, offers a unique experience as you enter an authentic restored lignite mine. Located in Escucha, Teruel, it allows visitors to descend more than 200 metres underground and explore galleries that recreate mining life.

It is a journey into the past that combines history, technology and adventure. From Cañizar del Olivar, the journey by car is approximately 30 kilometres, which is the equivalent of a 25-minute drive. A perfect getaway to learn and enjoy with the family. This visit has a close connection with the recent history of Cañizar del Olivar where, for most of the 20th century, a significant number of its neighbours worked in mining operations, some of the most important of which were located in the municipality of Cañizar.

The Molinos Crystal Caves, declared a Natural Monument, are an underground spectacle that fascinates visitors of all ages. Its impressive formations of stalactites and stalagmites, together with the diversity of colours and crystallisations, create a magical environment ideal for exploring with the whole family.

The guided tour, which lasts about an hour, takes you into two main rooms: the Sala de los Cristales and the Sala Marina, both of which are full of natural beauty. From Cañizar del Olivar, the journey by car is about 30 kilometres, which is approximately 30 minutes. An unforgettable experience to share and learn together.
